Sandy Bay has apparently reached the awkward stage where the people on the beach need to prepare for a nude awakening. They need to stay dressed – or be watched from above.

For decades, the secluded Cape Town beach has been known as an informal naturist spot. That unofficial tradition is now facing new signs banning nudity, which may literally catch visitors with their pants down.

And just in case anyone misses the message, surveillance, including drones, may be watching from above.

WHY MUST BEACH GOERS COVER UP?

Sandy Bay forms part of Table Mountain National Park, managed by SANParks.

SANParks says the beach has never been formally designated as a naturist beach. That means the long-standing tradition did not amount to official permission to go without clothes.

New signs now spell out the rules rather more bluntly.

They prohibit nudity and sexual misconduct on the beach and its pathways. They also warn that fines can be issued.

So Sandy Bay’s unofficial clothing-optional era appears to have reached a rather exposed conclusion.

The change follows concerns about crime and unlawful activities around the secluded beach.

SANParks, police, municipal officials and security groups have been working together on safety operations.

WHO IS WATCHING SANDY BAY FROM ABOVE?

Here is where things become slightly more awkward for anyone hoping to sneak a little nude sunbathing in.

The new signs warn that Sandy Bay is under surveillance, including by drones. That gives the phrase “someone might be watching” an entirely new meaning.

Cape Town has already used drones at beaches for safety monitoring. In 2025, the city said drones could help locate swimmers in trouble and support enforcement operations.

The idea of a drone hovering above a beach where people once happily went nude is unlikely to make anyone feel invisible.

Fortunately, the message is clear to the naked eye: If you are heading to Sandy Bay, taking your clothes along is now strongly advisable.

CAN SANDY BAY STILL BE A NATURIST BEACH?

That question is likely to keep the debate alive.

A petition launched in March called for Sandy Bay to become a formally regulated naturist beach. Supporters argued that clear rules could protect visitors while recognising the beach’s long-standing use.

The petition attracted 2 487 signatures. Naturist representatives have also argued that nudity should not be confused with sexual misconduct.

For now, however, SANParks’ position is clear. Sandy Bay is part of a national park, and its rules apply. There will be no exception regarding (un)dress code.

So the beach itself has not changed. The sand is still sandy, the sea is still wet, and the Cape sun remains capable of finding every exposed centimetre.

The difference is that visitors now have a simple choice. Keep the clothes on, or grin and “bare” attention from the people watching over Sandy Bay in the naked light of day.

Perhaps the beach’s unofficial dress code has finally become official and a real case of nude concern.
