Flower season in Namaqualand is not over, and the last few days of August are still a good time to take a trip.

The key is knowing where the bloom is moving and when flowers open.

IS THE FLOWER SEASON IN NAMAQUALAND OVER?

No. SANParks says Namaqua National Park’s 2026 season is expected to peak between mid-August and mid-September, weather permitting. That puts visitors in the middle of the main viewing window.

The park began reporting flowers on July 29. Early blooms included Namaqualand daisies, arctotis, Cape marigolds, vygies, sporries and oxalis. Flowering was patchy then, with more colour expected as the season progressed.

That timing matters because Namaqualand does not flower as one field. Rainfall varies across short distances, so one road can fade while another starts to colour up.

WHERE ARE FLOWERS STILL SHOWING?

Start at the Skilpad section of Namaqua National Park, near Kamieskroon. SANParks identifies Skilpad as a key flower-viewing area, with a circular drive and walking trails. The park also offers flower viewing towards the coastal sections.

SANParks lists Skilpad, Korhaan and Heaviside trails for closer views.

The park sits in the Succulent Karoo biome, which has exceptional plant diversity. More than 1 000 of its estimated 3 500 plant species occur nowhere else.

Springbok and the surrounding granite country can also reward flower hunters in the second half of August. Routes around Kamieskroon and Garies are worth considering, but conditions can change quickly.

Garies is also a useful stop on the N7 corridor. The town sits in flower country, with seasonal displays recorded around the area.

Local information remains important because flowering of different species can vary between valleys and slopes.

WHEN SHOULD YOU GO TO SEE THE FLOWERS?

Timing your drive around sunshine can make the difference between closed blooms and an open display.

SANParks recommends sunny conditions with temperatures of at least 18°C. Flowers open more fully in warmth and direct sun.

The West Coast is another option if you are travelling from Cape Town. West Coast National Park’s Postberg section opened on August 1 and remains open until September 30. SANParks says some species appeared earlier than usual, but more can emerge during the season.

The park recorded more than 23 000 visitors during August 2025. Postberg recorded about 7 500 vehicle entries during that flower season.

The 2026 season is therefore well underway, not finished.

For travellers wondering whether they have missed the show, the answer is no. The latter half of August falls inside the expected peak period in Namaqualand.

A trip now can still deliver flowers, particularly if you choose your route based on local updates and visit on a sunny day.

The flowers do not follow a calendar. They follow rain, temperature and sunlight. That makes checking conditions before leaving as important as choosing the destination.
