Voter registration: Your absolute last chance ahead of 4 November elections
Voter registration for the 2026 local government elections closes soon. Here is what South Africans, including those abroad, must know.
Eligible South African citizens have until midnight on Friday, 7 August 2026, to complete their voter registration or update their details online ahead of the local government elections on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.
At the weekend, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa announced that he would officially gazette the election date on Friday, which legally closes the voters’ roll.
According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), the voters’ roll has officially surpassed 29 million following the final registration weekend on 1 and 2 August.
However, for the millions of South Africans living abroad, it is vital to note that citizens cannot vote in municipal elections from outside the country. Under South African law, local government elections require physical residency within a specific ward.
How to complete your voter registration before Friday
To make registration easier, the IEC recently introduced a new voter registration channel on WhatsApp. Eligible citizens can register or update their address by sending “Hi” to 0600 88 0000.
This mobile-friendly system uses secure identity checks, including OTP verification and identity document uploads, to safely add voters to the roll. Alternatively, the online portal remains fully operational until midnight on Friday.
‘Take your protest to the ballot box’
Speaking in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend, Hlabisa urged citizens not to wait until the last day.
“Don’t wait for the last day because you will be excluding yourself from deciding your future for the development that you want as a community,”
“This time around, we don’t want people to protest, to march on the streets; we want people to take their protest to the ballot box,” he said.
The final registration weekend on 1 and 2 August recorded 1.7 million voter interactions, including 291 806 new registrations.
Urban provinces led the digital surge, with Gauteng recording 86 492 online transactions, KwaZulu-Natal with 41 334, and Western Cape with 33 783. Youth participation was exceptionally strong, representing 26% of all registration transactions.
