Kaizer Chiefs tie down tough-tackling midfielder
Kaizer Chiefs have decided to keep their midfield anchor for at least another season as they look they rebuild the team.
Kaizer Chiefs have tied down tough-tackling midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa for at least another season.
Mthethwa saw his initial deal expire at the end of June, but Amakhosi, under the new technical team, decided that he stays.
The midfielder was not a regular for Chiefs last season as Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze preferred other players in his position.
Both coaches have since left Naturena with Ben Youssef now at Durban City and Kaze with Sekhukhune United.
Amakhosi have now secured Mthethwa’s future and the player can now work on anchoring that midfield next season.
Mthethwa is currently in Spain with the rest of his teammates where they are playing high-profile friendlies to prepare for the new campaign.
So far, Chiefs have played two friendlies against Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers and Al Kholood of Saudi Arabia.
Fernando da Cruz’s men drew both matches 1-1 with both Etoisa Ighodaro and Asavela Velebayi finding the back of the net.
KAIZER CHIEFS EXTEND SIBONGISENI MTHETHWA’S STAY
“Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Sibongiseni ‘Ox’ Mthethwa’s stay at the club for another season has been confirmed. Mthethwa joined Amakhosi from Stellenbosch FC in September 2023 on a three-year deal,” reports FARPost.
“That contract expired in June 2026, but FARPost has established that the former Black Leopards midfielder will remain at Naturena for the upcoming campaign.”
WHAT ARE MTHETHWA’S NUMBERS?
Mthethwa has featured 61 times and provided a single assists since his arrival from Stellies three seasons ago.
The 32-year-old made just 23 appearances in all competitions last season, including 16 in the league.
