A passport that expires next year does not automatically prevent December or January travel.

The key issue involves your destination’s entry requirements and your passport’s exact expiry date.

Some countries require six months of remaining validity beyond your travel date. Others require less, depending on their immigration rules.

South Africans should therefore check the requirements before booking a festive-season trip.

CAN I TRAVEL WITH A PASSPORT EXPIRING NEXT YEAR?

Yes, potentially, but the expiry date matters.

A passport remains valid until its stated expiry date, unless another rule affects your entry.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation advises travellers to check destination requirements. It specifically warns travellers about passports expiring within six months. DIRCO’s travel advice also recommends sufficient blank pages.

This means someone travelling in December 2026 could face different rules. A passport expiring in August 2027 may satisfy some destinations. Another destination could reject it because it lacks six months’ validity.

You should also consider your return date, not just your departure date. Some countries calculate passport validity from the date you leave their territory.

HOW MUCH PASSPORT VALIDITY DO YOU NEED?

Many countries follow a six-month validity rule, but no universal rule exists. Travellers must check the specific requirements for every destination and transit country.

For example, Schengen countries require three months’ validity after your intended departure. The passport must also have been issued within the previous ten years.

The United Kingdom follows a different approach for visitors. Your passport should remain valid throughout your entire stay.

These examples show why travellers should avoid relying on a blanket six-month rule. Your passport may meet one country’s requirements but fail another’s.

DOES YOUR PASSPORT NEED BLANK PAGES?

Yes, available pages can matter just as much as the expiry date. South African authorities advise travellers to have at least two blank pages.

The Border Management Authority confirms that passports need two completely unused pages. The final passport page must also remain blank.

A damaged passport can also create problems at border controls. DIRCO advises travellers to replace damaged passports before travelling.

South African adult passports normally remain valid for ten years. Child passports remain valid for five years. South African diplomatic guidance recommends applying six to twelve months before expiry.

If your passport expires during the festive season, renewal makes practical sense. A new passport removes uncertainty around airline checks and foreign immigration rules.

Before travelling, check your destination’s official requirements and any transit countries. The IATA Travel Centre provides destination-specific passport and visa information.

A few minutes of checking could prevent a very expensive airport surprise.
