There are several ways South Africans can avoid standing in lengthy queues to renew their vehicle license disc online. Our colleagues at Business Tech looked at all the options across the provinces and tallied up the costs so you can make the best choice for your pocket.
As of July 2023, here are the cheapest options to renew your license disc online, but it all depends on which province you live in …
LICENSE DISC ONLINE: WHAT OPTIONS ARE THERE?
The two most used options come via government – the Department of Transport’s (DOT’s) eNatis.gov.za website is available countrywide. And if you’re based in the Western Cape, you have access to e-Services. You can renew your license disc online through each of these with a R72 service fee and R99 delivery fee, for a total cost of R171.
Remember, this is over and above the license renewal fee for your particular car – which is based on your vehicle’s mass and what province you’re in. We explained this in our article on vehicle license renewal fees. CLICK HERE for more detail.

To book either of the above. Visit the DOT’s eNatis website at online.natis.gov.za/
Or Western Cape e-Services at bookings.capetown.gov.za/qmaticwebbooking.
You can also make online bookings for an in person appointment in the Western Cape by contacting the call centre on 0860 103 089 or emailing them at vehicle.licence@capetown.gov.za.
WHERE ELSE CAN I RENEW MY LICENSE DISC ONLINE?
In July 2023, there are more than just government institutions for South Africans to renew their license disc online. There are specialist online services, banks, retailers, and even the post office. Here’s how they stack up:
1. PAYCITY
The online service of PayCity is the most affordable at R113.85. There is no service fee or delivery fee, so R113.85 is the all-in cost – the service is only available in major cities though. Which means delivery of your license disc outside of a major metropolitan area will add an additional delivery fee.
PayCity is the one we recommend if you’re not based in an outlying area. The PayCity portal also gives you the option to view and pay speeding and traffic fines, municipal accounts and prepaid utilities. Register for it HERE.
2. SOUTH AFRICAN POST OFFICE
The next cheapest to renew your license disc online is through the South African Post Office, including the R72 service fee and R75 delivery fee, it works out to R147 in total. This service is available countrywide.
However, we would recommend checking the list of the participating post offices HERE, as branches are being added and removed all the time.
Alternatively, contact the Post Office call centre on 0860 111 502 to find the Post Office nearest operational branch to you.
3. BANKING INSTITUTIONS
Several banks offer the option to renew your vehicle license disc online or through a banking app. However, depending on your bank, you will have to check what additional admin and courier fees apply.
If your vehicle is financed through Wesbank, they can assist you with renewal online. The most widely advertised in South Africa is First National Bank (FNB), which charges its customers no delivery fee but rather a R199 service fee to renew their license disc online.
This only applies if you live in Gauteng and City of Cape Town. Click HERE for more details.
4. PICK N PAY
Independent retailers like Pick n Pay also offer the value-add service of online license disc renewal to their customers. You can apply online with Pick n Pay but note that the retailer is the most expensive option here with a R250 service fee and R79 delivery fee, adding up to R329 in total.
Note, this service is not available in the Western Cape.

While not strictly online, Spar is another service provider that offers license disc renewals at an affordable price. For an all-in service fee of R199 you can get it done when you visit a supported Spar store.
Bring all necessary documentation and collect the new disc from the same branch when ready. This option is significantly cheaper than when it first launched, costing R445.
