Eskom announces Stage 3 load shedding

Eskom has declared Stage 3 load shedding for the upcoming weekend, commencing at 16:00 on Friday and continuing until 5:00 on Saturday.

In a last-minute decision, Eskom, the power utility company, has declared its intention to implement Stage 3 load shedding. Commencing at 16:00 on Friday and continuing until 5:00 on Saturday.

Following this, starting at 5:00 on Saturday, they will transition to a combination of Stage 1 and Stage 2 load shedding, with an uncertain end date.

LOAD SHEDDING SCHEDULE

Eskom’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, provided details on the power outage plan.

“Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 today until 5:00 on Saturday. Thereafter, Stage 1 load shedding will be implemented from 5:00 until 16:00, followed by Stage 2 load shedding until 5:00 on Sunday. This pattern will be repeated daily until further notice,” said Mokwena.

Mokwena emphasized that Eskom will be closely monitoring the power system. And is ready to adjust the load shedding schedule if necessary. Currently, unplanned outages have reached 17,507 MW of generating capacity, including the delayed return of Koeberg Unit 1, while planned maintenance has taken 4,783 MW out of service.

“Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit each at Camden, Majuba, and Medupi power stations, as well as two generating units at Arnot Power Station, were taken offline for repairs. In the same period, two generating units at Kriel Power Station were returned to service.”

ESKOM’S TEAMS ARE WORKING HARD TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM

Mokwena assured the public that Eskom’s teams are working diligently to bring additional generating units back online as soon as possible. While the evening peak demand is estimated to be 26,002 MW.
