Former Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke joins World Court judges
The World Court will today hear arguments in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel and hopes the court grants provisional measures.
Former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke will join 15 judges on the bench, to hear arguments on South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice from today.
South Africa has accused Israel of inflicting genocidal acts towards the people of Palestine and says senior Israeli government officials have incited genocide unabated.
A SOUTH AFRICAN ON THE BENCH
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has announced that Moseneke will join the bench on an ad hoc basis.

“Under Article 31, paragraphs 2 and 3, of the Statute of the International Court of Justice, a State party (SouthAfrica) to a case before the ICJ which does not have a judge of its nationality on the Bench may choose a person to sit as judge ad hoc in that specific case” says DIRCO Head of Diplomacy Clayson Monyela.
South Africa will soon have a judge on the bench at the ICJ after University of Pretoria’s professor Dire Tladi was appointed as a World Court judge in November. His 9-year tenure begins in February.

- Moseneke, a former prisoner on Robben Island, helped draft the country’s Interim Constitution in 1993.
- He was appointed Constitutional Court judge in 2001
- Served as the Deputy Chief Justice from 2005 till 2016
