Long queues formed at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, 1 July, as travellers faced delays due to changes in security checkpoint procedures.

According to TimesLive, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) admitted to “operational disruptions” and said it was working to restore normal service levels.

By late Tuesday, ACSA had deployed additional staff and reported that domestic operations had mostly stabilised, while efforts to assist international passengers were ongoing.

Although ACSA confirmed that adjustments had been made at security checkpoints, it did not clarify what those changes involved.

The disruptions seem to affect only OR Tambo, as no other airports have reported issues.

In response, ACSA has urged travellers to plan ahead by arriving at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures. The company also stressed the need for passengers to proceed directly to security screening after check-in to prevent further delays.

Although operations are expected to normalise soon, ACSA has warned that passengers flying through OR Tambo this week should prepare for possible delays and arrive early.
