Gauteng residents woke up to temperatures near freezing as winter intensified, with cold mornings and mildly warmer afternoons expected.

Gauteng started the week with freezing weather, as Johannesburg and nearby cities recorded some of the coldest morning temperatures this winter.

According to SABC meteorologist Joel Guy, Johannesburg dropped to a bone-chilling 2°C, while Pretoria and Mafikeng registered just 3°C and 2°C, respectively.

Cloudy skies and chilly mornings

Guy confirmed that “it was pretty chilly in Gauteng this morning, especially in Johannesburg and Mafikeng, both starting at just 2 degrees.”

He pointed out that interior regions also experienced similarly icy temperatures, although skies were expected to clear later in the day.

While the mornings remain cold, daytime temperatures in the province are forecast to rise slightly.

“Johannesburg will peak at 18 degrees, Springs at 19, and Pretoria and Mafikeng should reach around 19 as well,” said Guy.

Drizzle elsewhere, but Gauteng remains dry

While some areas in Limpopo and Mpumalanga saw light rain and drizzle early in the day, Gauteng stayed mostly dry. Guy noted that “it is currently partly cloudy to cloudy in most parts, but Gauteng will remain dry with no significant rainfall expected.”

Fresh north-easterly winds are expected to persist along the eastern coastline, but Gauteng will experience calmer conditions by comparison.

Cooler trend continues

Despite the modest afternoon warm temperatures, the province remains firmly in the grip of winter. Guy warned that “the afternoons might feel slightly warmer compared to the past few days, but the cold mornings are set to continue for some time.”
