SASSA TO INTRODUCE BIOMETRIC ENROLLMENT IN SEPTEMBER

Starting in September 2025, SASSA will launch a new digital era in South Africa by implementing mandatory Beneficiary Biometric Enrolment in all its offices.

The Biometric Enrolment will serve as a tool to detect and prevent fraudulent activities in the SASSA grant system and will also identify forged green identity documents that frontline staff may not reliably detect.

“Our plans were to commence with biometric enrolment at the beginning of the 2025/2026 financial year; however, we hit a snag, but we have ironed out the issues that delayed our plans and it is all systems go for the implementation,”said SASSA CEO Themba Matlou.

From 1 September 2025, SASSA will capture and approve grant applications with biometric fingerprint enrolment and facial recognition through electronic Know Your Client (eKYC).

The agency will place applications without biometric data into the review cycle to notify clients of the need to capture biometrics as required by the review process.

Furthermore, SASSA stated that it will act against and hold its officials accountable if they are suspected or caught collaborating with anyone to defraud its systems.
