British rock band Coldplay may return to South Africa in 2027, with frontman Chris Martin hinting at upcoming shows in southern Africa during the final leg of their Music of the Spheres world tour.

Since beginning in March 2022, the tour has become one of the biggest in music history, performing to over 13 million fans across 211 shows and generating more than R25 billion in ticket sales.

Coldplay last performed in South Africa in 2011, with concerts in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Raised hopes among Coldplay fans

Speaking at Wembley Stadium in London, Martin confirmed that the tour will resume in 2027, with 138 additional shows planned.

Although no venues or dates have been confirmed, his mention of southern Africa has raised hopes among local fans that South Africa could be included.

If added, the tour could mark a historic return for the band and potentially surpass Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour as the highest-grossing tour of all time.

For now, South African fans must wait for official confirmation, but signs suggest a long-awaited Coldplay return may be on the horizon.

Martin and his partner Dakota Johnson called time on their on-and-off eight-year romance in June this year.

Who are Coldplay?

Coldplay is a British rock band formed in London in 1997.

The group includes vocalist and pianist Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer and percussionist Will Champion, and manager Phil Harvey.

Renowned for their live performances, they have significantly influenced popular culture through their music, advocacy, and achievements.

The band members first met at University College London, initially calling themselves Big Fat Noises, then Starfish, before settling on Coldplay.

With over 160 million records sold worldwide, Coldplay ranks among the best-selling music acts of all time.

They also became the first group in Spotify history to reach 90 million monthly listeners.
