Somerset Mall in Cape Town is set to unveil the first phase of its large-scale redevelopment next month.
This will mark a major milestone in one of the Western Cape’s biggest retail upgrades in recent years.
The project, led by property group Hyprop, expands the mall’s footprint by around 5 500 square metres and introduces more than 50 new stores, positioning Somerset Mall as a key retail and leisure hub for Somerset West and surrounding areas.
Cape Town mall to reopen in November
According to Hyprop, the expansion responds to growing consumer demand and continued population growth in the Helderberg region.
“We’re excited to meet the growing demand here in Somerset West,” Wayne Abegglen, Hyprop’s Portfolio Executive for the Western Cape, said.
“We’re bringing over 50 new stores, with a focus on athleisure and affordable luxury brands, plus a variety of new customer amenities to set a new standard for retail in the region.”
Sustainability and upgrades
The redevelopment places strong emphasis on sustainability, incorporating solar power, water-saving technologies, and other energy-efficient systems in line with international green building standards.
Shoppers can expect a redesigned layout with improved flow, modernised interiors, and upgraded facilities aimed at improving accessibility and comfort. The mall will also introduce extended trading hours, ticketless parking, and electric vehicle charging stations.
Beyond its retail expansion, Somerset Mall plans to strengthen its appeal as a family and lifestyle destination. The new additions include upgraded family-friendly areas, expanded dining options, and a refurbished restroom network.
An art mile featuring works by a renowned South African sculptor will also form part of the redevelopment, adding a cultural and visual dimension to the shopping experience.
The first phase of the redevelopment opens to the public in November 2025, with further upgrades expected to follow in subsequent phases.
