For more than three decades, Ronnie’s Sex Shop has been a must-stop landmark for travellers cruising along South Africa’s scenic Route 62.

Known for its cheeky name, walls covered in graffiti, and bras hanging from the ceiling, the bar has earned cult status as one of the country’s most famous roadside attractions.

Now, the beloved watering hole is officially on the market, with an eye-watering asking price.

From farm stall to global curiosity

The story of Ronnie’s Sex Shop is as eccentric as the name itself. It began in the 1970s when local farmer Ronnie Price opened a modest farm stall selling produce in Barrydale, along the quiet Route 62.

But a prank by his friends changed everything: they mischievously painted the word “Sex” between “Ronnie’s” and “Shop” on his signboard.

The odd new name caught attention, and soon, curious travellers began stopping by. Seizing the opportunity, Ronnie ditched the fruit and veggies and turned the stall into a bar. Over time, it became a magnet for backpackers, bikers, and road-trippers from around the world, each leaving their mark on its graffiti-covered walls.

A Route 62 icon

The bar’s fame skyrocketed in the early 2000s as Route 62 gained international recognition as a scenic alternative to the N2 highway. Tourists exploring the wine route between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn made Ronnie’s Sex Shop a must-see pit stop.

Over the years, the quirky establishment has been featured in numerous travel guides, documentaries, and social media posts, cementing its place in local folklore.

The sale of a legend

Ronnie Price, now in his later years, has decided it’s time to pass the torch. The sale of the property, which is priced at R17.9 million, includes:

  • The main bar and deck area (seating for ±60 guests)
  • A coffee shop and gift shop
  • A 230-hectare working farm
  • A smaller flat and additional infrastructure

Price will, however, retain a life right to the main farmhouse, which includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
