Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

SAWS has issued Level 1 yellow alerts as severe storms are expected in some regions, with an advisory of a heatwave gripping parts of South Africa.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

Yellow Level 1 Warning: Severe thunderstorms leading to localised damages to infrastructure, property, vehicles, and injuries (livelihood and livestock) due to hail, damaging winds, heavy downpours and excessive lightning, are expected over the extreme north-eastern parts of Northern Cape and western parts of North West.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over Dawid Kruiper, Kai !Garib, Karoo Hoogland as well as the Kamiesberg Local Municipalities in the Northern Cape and most parts of the West Coast District in the Western Cape.

ADVISORIES

Very hot to extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the Kamiesberg Local Municipality in the Northern Cape as well as the West coast, Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and Garden Route District Municipalities, and the Drakenstein Local Municipality in the Western Cape.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect warm in the extreme north, otherwise partly cloudy and cool with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect morning fog along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, morning fog along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect cloudy with morning fog patches in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme west.

Free State

In Free State, cloudy with morning fog patches in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Northern Cape

The day will start fine and warm to hot, but very hot in places in the west. It will become partly cloudy in the east with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly.

Western Cape

Fine and warm to hot but very hot to extremely hot in places over the interior. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong easterly along the south coast, otherwise fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly, reaching near gale force along the south-west coast in the early morning.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Fog patches in the south-east in the morning, otherwise fine and warm to hot, but very hot in places over the interior. The wind along the coast will be light north-easterly, becoming moderate to fresh easterly late morning, reaching strong in places in the afternoon.

The Eastern half: The day will start cloudy with fog in places and a chance of light rain in the south-east in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and cool with isolated afternoon thundershowers in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be light and variable at first, otherwise moderate to fresh easterly, becoming north-easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal

Morning and evening fog patches over the interior, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers. It will be warm in places in the north. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-easterly, becoming light to moderate northerly to north-easterly in the south from late morning, spreading northwards from the afternoon.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Moderate
