SAWS warns of severe thunderstorms, flooding and damaging winds

Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 1 for damaging winds and has issued a Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms causing possible localised flooding, excessive lightning, damaging winds and hail over parts of South Africa.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Severe Thunderstorms leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, settlements and low-lying areas/bridges, excessive lightning, strong damaging winds and large amounts of small hail and/or large hail are expected over the central parts of Northern Cape, extreme north-eastern parts of Western Cape, and Eastern Cape except along the coast.

B. Yellow level 1 Warning: Damaging Winds leading to localised damage to settlements (formal and informal) and localised problems for high-sided vehicles on prone routes due to cross winds on exposed high level roads/bridges are expected over the central southern parts of Northern Cape and north-eastern parts of Western Cape.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the central parts of Northern Cape, north-eastern parts of the Western Cape and north-western parts of Eastern Cape.

ADVISORIES

Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over the eastern parts of KwaZulu Natal and over the interior of Eastern Cape.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect partly cloudy and warm but hot in the extreme north with isolated thundershowers and showers, becoming cloudy in the evening.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, becoming cloudy in the evening. Morning drizzle is expected along the escarpment.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, partly cloudy and warm but hot in places, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme south and east. Morning drizzle is expected along the escarpment.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Free State

In Free State, partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered over the western and southern parts.

Northern Cape

The day will start partly cloudy, windy and hot to very hot, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers except in the extreme west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly.

Western Cape

Partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the north-east. It will become cloudy with light rain and showers along the south-west coast from the evening. It will be windy in the north-east in the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly along the south coast in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Partly cloudy and hot to very hot but warm in places along the coast, with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light and variable in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh south-westerly.

The Eastern half: The day will start partly cloudy and hot to very hot but warm in places along the coast, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate south-westerly, becoming south-easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal

Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers expect in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north- easterly.
