AFCON 2025: Bafana Bafana’s Lyle Foster emulates Phil Masinga
Lyle Foster scored a stunner of a goal as Bafana Bafana beat Angola, and this was somehow a feat for the 25-year-old.
Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster emulated the late Philemon Masinga by scoring against Angola on Monday.
Foster scored Bafana Bafana’s winning goal in that hard-fought 2-1 win which sent a message of intent to other Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) rivals.
Now, in so doing, Foster became the first Bafana Bafana player to score at AFCON while playing in the Premier League since Masinga.
Masinga was the first in 1996 when Bafana Bafana won the AFCON tournament on home soil, according to OptaJabu.
It was on 13 January when Masinga opened the scoring against Cameroon as Bafana Bafana went on to win 3-0 in the opening match.
At the time, Masinga was on the books of Leeds United while Foster is currently on the books Burnley in the Premier League.
