Store shelves hold memories: South Africa’s discontinued favourites
Some flavours disappear from store shelves, but the memories they leave behind remain.
There are few things as powerful as food when it comes to nostalgia. For many South Africans, certain snacks and drinks were part of everyday life, items you picked up without thinking twice.
Today, they exist mostly in memories and conversations that start with, “Do you remember…?”
These products were more than just brands. They were part of school breaks, sports days, road trips, and family weekends. Their disappearance feels like losing a small piece of our shared history. While new products have taken their place, they often lack the same emotional connection.
As consumer tastes changed and major companies streamlined their product ranges, many well-loved items were quietly discontinued. Yet nostalgia remains strong.
Sweet treats we still miss
Caramello Bears were once a firm favourite, small chocolate bears filled with soft caramel that rarely lasted long once opened. Tempo chocolate, known for its light, crisp texture, also disappeared without much warning. Even older flavours of Nesquik, such as banana and strawberry, are no longer part of their local offering. More information on why this happened can be seen on the article called: “Nesquik to be discontinued in SA owing to lower demand”.
Drinks from another time
Who can forget Oros in thick glass bottles, or bright green Creme Soda that stained your tongue? Jive in its original packaging was a staple at children’s parties, soccer evenings, and family braais. Many of these drinks taste different today, or survive only in memory.
More than just food
These products represent a time when life felt slower and simpler. For me, like for many other South Africans, they bring back memories of school tuck shops, pocket money, and carefree family days. Perhaps we don’t just miss the taste, but the feeling of those moments, when small things were enough and life felt a little lighter.
