South Africans Abroad: Mihlali Mayambela becomes a free agent!

Mihlali Mayambela contributed 19 goals and 15 assists in 125 matches across all competitions for Aris Limassol for over three years.

Bafana Bafana midfielder Mihlali Mayambela is a free agent after agreeing to part ways with Cypriot club Aris Limassol.

Mayambela had been with Aris since 2022, and he had come one of their star players over the years.

However, the two parties sat down and reached an agreement to go separate ways as per Aris’ statement.

It is unclear as to whether or not Mayambela has suitors already for the remainder of the current season.

The 28-year-old was previously linked with a move to the PSL with Kaizer Chiefs touted as his possible destination.

Nonetheless, Mayambela remained committed and loyal to Aris, and those reports proved to be nothing but speculation.

“Aris Limassol FC announces the mutual termination of its agreement with South African winger Mihlali Mayambela,” reads the statement.

“The 29-year-old forward, joined the club in the summer of 2022 and played a key role in its historic achievements.
During his time with Aris, Mayambela contributed to the team’s Cypriot First Division title, the Super Cup victory, and competed in the UEFA Europa League group stage.”

“Over his three-and-a-half years at the club, Mayambela made a total of 125 appearances across all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing 15 assists.

“Aris Limassol expresses its sincere gratitude to Mihlali Mayambela for his valuable contribution to the club and wishes him every success in the next chapter of his career.”

AN EYE ON THE FIFA WORLD CUP?

Mayambela is most likely to move to a league that will enhance his chances of returning to the Bafana Bafana setup.

He was overlooked for the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco by Hugo Broos.

The midfielder certainly has an eye on the upcoming FIFA World Cup which will be played between June and July 2026.
