Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued multiple severe weather alerts, including Yellow Level 5, Level 4 and Level 2 warnings, as intense thunderstorms are expected to lash several provinces across the country.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Orange Level 5 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to damage to infra- structure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over the extreme eastern parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

B. Yellow level 4 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to damage to infra- structure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over KwaZulu-Natal as well as the central parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

C. Yellow level 4 warning: Damaging winds and waves leading to localised disruption of small harbours or port for a short period of time and damage of settlements and infrastructure are expected between Port Edward and Port St. Lucia.

D. Yellow level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to localised damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over the Gauteng, eastern parts of North West, extreme eastern parts of Free State, south-western parts of Limpopo and the western Highveld of Mpumalanga.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in places over the ZF Mgcawu and Pixley Ka Seme district Municipalities.

ADVISORIES

Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over the north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread in the east. It will be hot in the Lowveld

Limpopo

In Limpopo, partly cloudy and warm to hot in places with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread in the Lowveld.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thunder-showers, but isolated in the west.

Free State

In Free State, cloudy in the extreme east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

Northern Cape

The day will start partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thunder-showers in the north-east. It will be fine in the west. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-easterly.

Western Cape

Partly cloudy warm to hot, but cool to warm along the south coast and adjacent interior where isolated to scattered showers and rain can be expected in the morning. It will be fine and windy over the western parts. The wind along the coast will be strong south-easterly in the west and south-west but fresh south-easterly to easterly along the coast.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Partly cloudy in the extreme north, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and rain, but scattered along the coast and adjacent interior. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-easterly.

The Eastern half: The day will start with morning fog in the north-east, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and rain, but widespread over the Wild Coast. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-westerly.

KwaZulu-Natal

Morning fog over the interior, otherwise cloudy and warm with widespread showers and thundershowers. It will be cool in places in the south-west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly in the extreme north at first, otherwise fresh to strong south- westerly to southerly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Low
