The first Soweto Derby of the season where Kaizer Chiefs will host Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium is upon us.

The two giants of South African football will battle out for bragging rights and three points on Saturday afternoon.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:30.

Now, Chiefs will head into this Soweto Derby like a wounded lion after losing 2-1 to Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday.

Pirates, on the other hand, will not be in action until Saturday but they also come from a Nedbank Cup heartbreak.

The Buccaneers suffered a shock defeat to minnows Casric Stars last weekend, but they would have rested enough come Saturday.

SOWETO DERBY: KAIZER CHIEFS LOSE TO STELLIES BUT BEAT PIRATES IN NOVEMBER 2021

It was Tuesday, 2 November 2021 when Kaizer Chiefs welcomed Stellenbosch FC to the FNB Stadium.

Amakhosi suffered a 1-0 league defeat to Stellies with Ashley du Preez scoring the only goal of the game on the night.

Of course, Chiefs went on to sign Du Preez who remains their player to this day and could face Pirates on Saturday.

Chiefs then faced Pirates four days later for the first Soweto Derby of the season in November 2021, and the Glamour Boys beat their nemesis 2-1.

Now, fast forward to Tuesday, 24 February…

Chiefs faced and lost 2-1 to Stellies. Flavio da Silva opened the scoring for Amakhosi but Langelihle Phili and Devin Titus stole the points for Stellies.

Could this be a repeat of November 2021 for Chiefs given that they lost to Stellies just before hosting Pirates on Saturday?

Only time will tell…

WHY THIS IS MORE ABOUT POINTS THAN BRAGGING RIGHTS

This Soweto Derby is certainly more about the points than bragging rights for both Chiefs and Pirates.

And that’s because the two teams are dubbed ‘title contenders’ with Pirates on 38 points from 17 games.

Amakhosi, on the other hand, are placed fourth on the standings with 30 points from 16 league games.
