Cape Town International Airport is set to undergo a significant upgrade as part of a wider infrastructure investment programme by Airports Company South Africa. The project, valued at just over R10 billion, aims to expand the airport’s facilities and prepare it for increasing passenger demand in the coming years.

The airport has experienced steady growth in passenger numbers, making it one of the busiest travel hubs in the country. Officials say the investment is necessary to ensure the airport can handle future traffic while maintaining efficient operations and a high standard of service for travellers. The airport has won many awards in the past.

The upgrades form part of ACSA’s broader national infrastructure investment programme, which focuses on improving airport facilities across South Africa.

New runway and improved aircraft operations

One of the biggest parts of the upgrade is the construction of a new realigned main runway, which will improve aircraft movement and increase capacity at the airport. The runway project alone is estimated to cost around R6.39 billion and will include new taxiways designed to speed up aircraft turnaround times.

The redesigned runway will also help reduce congestion during busy travel periods and allow the airport to accommodate next generation aircraft more efficiently.

Expansion of terminal buildings

Major improvements are also planned for the airport’s domestic and international terminals. The domestic arrivals area will be expanded to increase passenger processing capacity, while the departures section will also be upgraded to improve passenger flow.

Additional developments include more aircraft stands, improved boarding gates and modernised passenger facilities. These upgrades are expected to make travel through the airport smoother and more comfortable for passengers.

Boost for tourism and the local economy

Officials say the large scale investment will strengthen the airport’s role as a key gateway for tourism and trade in the Western Cape. Improved infrastructure could also help attract more international flights and increase connectivity between Cape Town and global destinations.

With construction expected to roll out in phases over several years, the upgrade is seen as a long term investment in the region’s economic growth and aviation sector.
