South African consumers have been hearing rumours about the tech giant’s local launch for more than a year. It seems like next year is finally the time when South Africans will be able to order items directly from Amazon – and the first time when local retailers can list their stores.

Here’s what we know so far about Amazon’s planned move to the country.

AMAZON: SOUTH AFRICAN LAUNCH

Even though Amazon has been around for almost 30 years, South Africans have been unable to order anything directly from the company.

Their planned launch is scheduled for 2024.

After their 2024 launch, South African retailers will be able to list their web-stores on the company website. Everything works the same as Amazon.com for overseas customers – except after their launch, stores and customers can be local.

Reviews are another important part of the Amazon.com success story. A good review can make you choose one product, while avoiding another. The review system is one way in which the company increases accountability for retailers.

Amazon is known for fast delivery, and stocking such a huge variety of items that you can speed-order a single onion to your front door.

Isn’t that something to look forward to?

A COMPANY HISTORY

According to Britannica, the company was first started in 1994 by now-billionaire Jeff Bezos.

Since the beginning of the company selling books out of a small garage, the business has grown to one of the world’s most recognizable brands.

Related services like Amazon Prime, which offers movies and show subscriptions, launched in 2005 and only made the brand even stronger.

Amazon has been available since the 90s for United States and UK consumers, but services are only set to become available for South Africans next year during the 2024 launch.
