Putting a smile on that dial every day is not as easy as it used to be when it seems like one has little control over many of the variables in our lives.

Persistent state-controlled power cuts, the rising cost of living, the country’s failing infrastructure, and a general feeling of doom and gloom about the future are having an impact on South Africans’ happiness levels.

It is quite comforting to know that taking stock of just a few simple things every day can be all it takes to up our happiness levels.

TOP TIPS FOR BEING HAPPY EVERY DAY

PRACTICE GRATITUDE

There are always things to be grateful for. Even during the most difficult and challenging times in our lives, one should find things to be grateful for.

Acknowledging what is good in life and being grateful for it is the first step toward happiness.

PRACTICE FORGIVENESS

This is a tough one since we often want to prove a point or teach others a lesson.  It is not about forgetting but instead, about letting go and choosing positive emotions over negative ones.

By embracing forgiveness, you also can begin to embrace peace and hope.

REGULAR EXERCISE

A healthy body and healthy mind are essential for survival in today’s challenging world. Exercise is not only good for the body but it is also beneficial for the mind.

Exercise can help to reduce stress and feelings of anxiety while boosting self-esteem and happiness.

VALUE FRIENDSHIPS

Life is all about people, and the value they add to our lives. The people around you can have a huge impact on your mood.

Be sure to surround yourself with people that make you happy.

CLEANLINESS

Clearing up your living space or even simply rearranging a few pieces of furniture in your home can help to revitalise you and lift your mood.

A clean and clutter-free space is a great way to help refresh the mind.

CELEBRATE SMALL VICTORIES

Part of learning how to be happy is to celebrate small wins. This triggers feelings of pride and happiness which can help motivate you to work towards the next small steps and eventually, your final goal.

Desmond Tutu’s wise saying, ”The only way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time“ applies here.

SLEEP PATTERNS

Quality sleep can help to prevent depression, lethargy and other general feelings of unhappiness.

Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep. Make sure you are getting enough sleep.

MINDFUL FOOD CHOICES

The saying “You are what you eat” is particularly relevant here. Food choices have an impact on your body and your state of mind.

While you may prefer eating the foods that make you happy, have them in moderation.

ACKNOWLEDGE UNHAPPINESS

Have you made a mistake or received some bad news? Such feelings can have lasting impacts on our mood.  Don’t sweep them under the carpet or pretend to be happy.

Acknowledge your feelings of unhappiness. Reflect on them and then shift your focus to what it will take to recover.

BREATHING DEEPLY

Stop and focus on your breathing. Be mindful. By simply breathing deeply, you can feel a little happier.

According to KFM, research suggests that slow breathing and deep breathing exercises can help to reduce stress.
