Mzanzi reacts to new Mandela statue: What nonsense is this?

South Africans reacted to Nelson Mandela’s statue unveiling with a lot of anger, calling it nonsense.

Many people worldwide have been celebrating the life of former South African president Nelson Mandela.

This day, 18 July, is Mandela’s birthday, and people remember him for his great work uniting all races.

Despite South Africans agreeing on the greatness of his work, some were furious about the idea of constructing a statue.

This disappointment was mainly due to the deteriorating economic conditions in the country.

Electricity, clean water and other basic needs are not available to all, and some South Africans feel that the government misplaced their priorities.

One fan asked about the cost of Nelson Mandela’s statue and highlighted what the money could have been used to.

“Money could have been spent better, student debt, Healthcare etc. something for the nation…my opinion.”

PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA UNVEILS NELSON MANDELA’S STATUE

After posting the video of Mandela’s statue, The Presidency cited his commitment to free South Africans.

“[WATCH]: Unveiling of the Nelson Mandela Statue at the Nelson Mandela Museum, Bhunga Building in Mthatha in observance of #MandelaDay.” it reads.

“The erection of this statue contributes to the creation of memorialisation programmes in honour of President Mandela’s unwavering commitment to the freedom of his people and as a founding father of democratic South Africa.” it finished.

As South Africa celebrates their democratic father, other respected people also show respect to Mandela.

Among them is billionaire Bill Gates who penned a lengthy message citing the inspiration he got from Mandela.

After the unveiling video of Nelson Mandela’s statue was shared on Twitter, many South Africans.

“And how much did this nonsense cost the country ..”

“I won’t be surprised if this project won’t cost above R20mil by the time the auditor-general found out soon..Nkosiyam? I’m stressed!?”

“And the town is soooo filthy, dilapidated and lawless! Yhuuu you guys ???”

“Celebrating him in a way that does not honour the person he was. He would have objected to have so many statues of himself installed everywhere when the children he used to feed starve.”

“Why? This is salt to the wound, especially in an area lacking many basic services. Priorities Mr President ?”
