Your new favourite bistro is almost here! Le Bistrot de Jan hits Cape Town, bringing Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s French flair right to our doorstep. Yes, our doorstep! No passport required.

If you’ve ever dreamt of tasting Michelin magic without flying to France, this is your moment. Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, the guy who put South African cuisine on the global map with his JAN restaurant in Nice, is teaming up with local legend Giles Edward (remember La Tête?). Together, they’re cooking up a storm at the freshly revamped Intercontinental Table Bay Hotel.

As Inside Guide spilled in December 2024, expect a menu that’s equal parts French class and Cape Town sass.

We’re talking confit duck with a rooibos twist, bobotie croquettes, and malva pudding soufflés. Prices? Between R180 and R350 a plate because good food shouldn’t break the bank, but it should blow your mind.

Why you should care

First off, the location is everything. The Intercontinental Table Bay Hotel just dropped R1 billion on a glow-up, and Le Bistrot de Jan is its crown jewel. Imagine sipping wine on a terrace with Table Mountain as your backdrop. Sigh.

But here’s the real kicker: this isn’t just another fancy restaurant. It’s a love letter to Cape Town. A place where French techniques meet local ingredients, and where every bite tells a story. As Jan Hendrik told Jacaranda FM, “This is about celebrating South Africa through food.”

And with tourism at the V&A Waterfront up by 12 percent this year, according to Cape Town Tourism, this bistro is set to become the spot for both locals and visitors.

What’s on the menu when Le Bistrot de Jan hits Cape Town?

  • Dishes that surprise: Think six-course tasting menus or à la carte gems like snoek brandade.
  • A vibe that’s pure Cape Town: Green and gold interiors nodding to the Springboks, a terrace bar with harbour views, and a team that’s all about flavour and zero waste.
  • A reason to dress up: Finally, a night out that’s as Instagram-worthy as it is delicious.
