Speeding: Traffic authorities issue stern warning to motorists

At the launch of the 2023 Road Safety Festive Season campaign, there was a firm message about the consequences of speeding this December.

Traffic authorities will not tolerate speeding this festive season. This was made abundantly clear at the launch of the 2023 Road Safety Festive Season campaign by the Minister of Transport, Lydia Sindisiwe Chikunga.

And just in time for what is traditionally the deadliest time on South African roads. In line with AARTO’s stricter laws for 2024 that have rubber-stamped by the Constitutional Court, South Africa’s Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) has bolstered speeding violations.

For those that don’t know, the controversial Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) acts as the administrator of the South African National Road Traffic Act. Coming into effect on 1 July 2024, speeding fines will be supplemented with driver demerit points on your license.

The new AARTO act, including the demerit system, dictates that motorists may only receive 15 demerit points on their license before suspension. You can be suspended twice before your driving license is taken away and you have to reapply.

Besides speeding, there are currently 2 659 other offences listed on the AARTO website, including their fines and associated demerit points. You can find a full list of them HERE.

CAN I CHECK MY FINES?

If you want to check the status of your fines, demerit points or any other infringement notices issued against you, click HERE:

  • Click on Query my fine.
  • Provide your ID and driving license number.
  • Juristic entities can provide their business register number and the ID number of a proxy.

AARTO says you should make use of this free facility, as many South Africans don’t know of the AARTO violations recorded against their particulars.

Therefore, speeding per zone, these are the speeds that will land you in court immediately:

  • 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
  • 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
  • 140 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
  • 160 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.
