Officials arrested a rent collector after discovering 90 undocumented foreigners living in unlawful conditions during a raid on a house in Johannesburg.

Authorities in Johannesburg arrested a rent collector and uncovered an illegal settlement where undocumented foreign nationals were living in poor conditions in the upscale suburb of Houghton.
On Wednesday, 18 June, the City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety Department and JMPD raided a house in Houghton.
Inside, they discovered 90 undocumented foreigners living in overcrowded rooms separated by makeshift curtains.
Public Safety MMC Dr Mgcini Tshwaku said another undocumented migrant was collecting rent from the residents, most of whom lacked legal documentation.
That individual, in turn, reported to a third party a white male who remains under investigation.
Rent Collector Arrested During Raid
Police arrested the undocumented rent collector after finding him hiding in overgrown grass behind the property.
They are holding him in custody and plan to question him about his involvement in the illegal occupation and any potential connections to those behind the operation.
“This discovery highlights the organised and concealed nature of illegal settlements facilitated by undocumented individuals exploiting others,” Tshwaku said.
No Human Trafficking or Drugs Found
Law enforcement officers searched the property for evidence of human trafficking or drugs but found none.
Authorities confirmed that the primary violations involved immigration offences and the unlawful occupation of private property.
Officials have now ordered the building’s closure.
The JMPD will monitor the site to prevent anyone from returning while the city completes legal procedures.
Authorities plan to deport most of the 90 undocumented individuals or hold them for further legal action.
City Urges Public to Report Illegal Settlements
Dr Tshwaku called on residents to remain vigilant and report illegal settlements and bylaw violations.
“Tip-offs about unlawful property use and undocumented occupants are essential to maintaining law and order in our city,” he said.
