An Air India flight carrying 242 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, on Thursday, 12 June, officials confirmed.
Airline representatives, police, and India’s health minister reported that the crash killed many passengers on flight AI171, according to Reuters.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed in a civilian area near Gatwick Airport in the UK just minutes after leaving the runway.
242 souls on board Air India flight
Of the 242 people on board, 217 were adults and 11 were children, a source told Reuters. Air India revealed that the passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.
“The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals,” Air India posted on X, adding that details were still being gathered.
TV footage showed the plane flying low over a residential area before vanishing from view. Moments later, a massive fireball erupted behind a row of homes.
