Anti-apartheid struggle stalwart, Aziz Pahad dies at 82

Anti-apartheid struggle stalwart Aziz Pahad served under former President Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki from 1994 to 2008.

Anti-apartheid struggle stalwart and former member of Parliament Aziz Pahad has passed away this evening, Wednesday, 27 September.

THE FAMILY STATEMENT IN RELATION TO AZIZ PAHAD’S PASSING

The Pahad family released a statement about the death of the anti-apartheid activist and member of the African National Congress (ANC).

The family statement read:

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Aziz Goolam Hoosein Pahad, during the evening of 27 September 2023, at the age of 82.
A patriot, freedom fighter and servant of the people throughout his life, former Deputy Minister Pahad was a dedicated member of the ANC, a brilliant diplomat and strategist who served as Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for International Relations from 1994 to 2008.
He leaves behind his wife Angina, brother, children, his granddaughter, and extended family members. He is also mourned by countless friends, comrades and colleagues, in South Africa and across the world.

The announcement of the funeral arrangements will be done in due course.

HEART-FELT TRIBUTES GO OUT TO THE LATE STRUGGLE STALWART

Tributes have started flooding social media from those who knew and loved the stalwart.

Sports personality Walter Mokoena said: “RIP Aziz Pahad, former deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Longest serving in cabinet). What an outstanding servant of the country. You ran your race, you fought a good fight, you kept the faith. I will miss your Charm and your infectious laughter”.

Linton Rensburg said: “RIP Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1994 – 2008) & Special Envoy to Gaza, Aziz Pahad. Thank you for your service to our country. Sad indeed as in July we laid to rest your brother Essop. Our thoughts and prayers with your family Cde Aziz”.

Nkhets’e Monyalotsa said: “That’s great sadness to hear about the passing away of Hon Aziz Coolman Hoosein Pahad my sincere sympathy and condolences to family, friends and the Government of RSA may his soul rest in eternal peace son of soil”.
