Cape Town opens its first drive-through vehicle licence renewal centre
For the first time in Cape Town, motorists can now renew their vehicle licence discs without leaving their cars.

The City has made this possible by opening its first drive-through licensing facility in Brackenfell.
Situated at the corner of Reservoir and Kruispad Roads, the new centre promises to shorten waiting times, completing renewals in as little as five minutes when paperwork is in order.
The facility currently operates Mondays to Fridays from 11:30 to 19:30 and Saturdays from 11:00 to 14:30. The City confirmed it is working with the Road Traffic Management Corporation to extend weekday hours even further.
“This new facility will cater exclusively for the renewal of motor vehicle licences. To ensure a more efficient service, it is cashless and accepts only debit and credit card payments,” said Mayco Member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi.
He added: “The drive-through aims to make life easier for motorists – you simply drive up, pay by card, receive your new disc and you can be on your way. Initial tests show the process can take less than five minutes.”
Motorists who received renewal notices via SMS need only present the message to complete the transaction.
A cashless drive-through experience
The City emphasised that it will not keep any cash on-site and urged residents to watch for additional innovations over the next year.
The launch follows a series of service upgrades aimed at improving customer experiences.
These upgrades include the City’s online booking system, which allows residents to book appointments for vehicle licensing, account payments, general enquiries, and payment arrangements at selected municipal branches. The City plans to expand this system further.
With the Brackenfell facility now open, the City aims to become the most trusted and convenient vehicle licence renewal provider, helping motorists save both time and hassle.
