Cape Town reports hundreds of road accidents in the last 10 days
The City of Cape Town reported a surge in accidents over the past 10 days as heavy rain battered the city.

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services responded to over 230 road accidents this past week.
In a statement, the department reported handling 162 motor vehicle accidents and 74 pedestrian-related incidents over the past 10 days.
They recorded these incidents between Friday, 27 June, and Sunday, 6 July, during a period of especially wet weather conditions in the City.
236 accidents in 10 days
The City said that these numbers were a stark reminder of the importance of increased vigilance on the roads during wet weather conditions, for both motorists as well as pedestrians.
Worryingly, these stats exclude incidents that were not reported to a central point, such as accidents without injuries that the parties involved reported directly to the nearest police station.
“We caution road users all of the time about adjusting their behaviour to account for the specific conditions. Motor vehicle accidents cause huge emotional and financial strain, even if just a fender bender. They also have the potential to cause significant traffic delays. Let this be a reminder to everyone to slow down in general, but especially in poor driving conditions,’ Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, said.
