Developers have cancelled plans for The Fynbos, Africa’s first biophilic building, which was set to rise on Bree Street in Cape Town.

The R1.2 billion project aimed to create a 24-story apartment tower featuring luxury amenities like a lap pool, plant-based restaurant, botanical bar, and rooftop sunset terrace, all designed with unique natural elements.

BusinessTech reports that, once completed, the “living building” would have featured a unique 1 200-square-metre vertical garden filled with indigenous trees and plants, designed to create a living, breathing façade in the heart of the city.

The Fynbos gets called off

According to BusinessTech, in May 2025, buyers were informed that development of the The Fynbos would not go ahead as initially planned.

Lurra Capital, the developer, announced that it cancelled the project due to shifting market conditions and a new strategic direction.

The company has since handed the building project over to another property developer, Tricolt, who plans to redesign it entirely from the ground up.
