Cape Town’s Bree Street, famous for its vibrant restaurants, boutiques, and urban energy, now reflects the City’s commitment to modern mobility after receiving an upgraded cycling lane.

The City of Cape Town, working with local advocacy group Young Urbanists and the Central City Improvement District (CCID), launched a pilot project to improve cycling infrastructure along this busy route.

The first phase of protecting the existing cycle lanes between Shortmarket Street and Riebeek Street is already well under way.

What’s changed in the cyclist’s lane

Bree Street already had a designated cycle lane, but the latest upgrade adds protective features like tactical bollards and kerbs, greatly enhancing safety and usability for cyclists.

“I have seen exciting progress being made with the upgrade of the Bree Street cycle lane between Shortmarket Street and Hans Strijdom Avenue,” said the City’s Mayco Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

“These upgrades will definitely make the cycle lane along the much-loved and bustling Bree Street safer to use.”

Creating a Safe Passage

Young Urbanists launched the initiative as part of their broader vision to create a “Safe Passage”—a connected network that makes cycling and walking safer and more accessible between surrounding neighbourhoods and the city centre.

Supplier Development Initiatives (SDI) is funding the project, with support from several City Urban Mobility teams.

“Together the City, Young Urbanists and the CCID have made this progress possible,” Quintas added. “This initiative is another way we are keeping Cape Town moving.”

Cape Town’s most Instagram-worthy road has finally reopened

In related news, one of Cape Town’s most scenic and photo-friendly routes has officially reopened to the public.

Tafelberg Road – that winds along the foot of Table Mountain – leads to the iconic aerial cableway as well as to the starting points of several popular hiking trails.

It has long been a favourite for tourists, photographers and Instagrammers seeking jaw-dropping and unparalleled views of the city.

Now, thanks to extensive upgrades by the City of Cape Town, the route is not only more picturesque but also safer and more accessible.
