City may reportedly sell portions of treasured Johannesburg Botanical Gardens
The City of Johannesburg is reportedly preparing to sell sections of the Botanical Gardens to private property developers.

Residents are criticising the City of Johannesburg for quietly planning to sell large portions of public parkland to private developers, including areas within the beloved Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Zoo Lake, and other major recreational sites.
According to 2Oceansvibe, internal tender documents reveal that high-density housing and commercial developments may be built on land currently used by the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia, Marks Park, and the Pirates Sports Club.
City council is expected to deliberate on the proposal during an August meeting, although no official announcement has been made yet.
City of Johannesburg selling off green spaces?
Additional properties reportedly targeted for sale include the Field and Study Recreational Centre, Melrose Bowling Club, Killarney Country Club, and Zoo Lake, all long-standing public spaces deeply embedded in Johannesburg’s community life.
Residents uncovered the proposed selloff after spotting these sites listed in a Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) tender document, with no prior public consultation.
The revelation sparked strong backlash from neighbourhood associations, environmental groups, and sports bodies.
Covering more than 80 hectares, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens serve as more than just a scenic retreat; they’re a biodiversity haven, a family-friendly recreation area, and one of the city’s few remaining green lungs.
The gardens feature walking trails, picnic areas, and themed plant sections, including the iconic rose garden.
