City Power has again embarked on another cut-off operation, and government hospitals, Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa, had nowhere to hide from the bill collectors.

However, the executives of the two institutions who were served with pre-termination notices told City Power officials that they had already started the process of clearing their debts.

“In our visit, we made it clear that failure to pay in the next 2-weeks will result in immediate cut-offs,” said Mangena.

CUT-OFF OPERATION DESCENDS ON HURSTHILL

According to City Power, the crackdown operation this week focused on areas under the Hursthill Service Delivery Centre which owed over R1.3-Billion.

“Today we were targeting 10 business and residential customers owing a total of R13-Million in unpaid electricity bills.

“Some of the businesses that were disconnected during the operation is Telkom – which owes over R2.9-million. It is shocking that the company has not made any payment for their electricity bill since 2021,” said Mangena.

Another business that was cut off is Ancient Oak Trade Invest, operating a pub in Melville, owing over R1-Million.

“This customer was found to have illegally re-connected power supply on a few occasions. As a result of that, hefty penalties will be imposed before she is reconnected. Less than an hour after we cut-off supply, the owner of the business contacted City Power, admitting that she failed to pay. She has agreed to settle the debt on the account and pay the fine for illegal re-connections,” Mangena explained.

GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS DODGING THE POWER BILL

He added that City Power is also concerned with the levels of non-payment from government institutions.

“Government properties across the City owe over half a billion rand.
We will be clamping down on these defaulters as we intensify our revenue collection drive. This is also an opportunity to remind other customers to come to us to settle their bills before we pay them an unpleasant visit,” Mangena cautioned.
