Water is slowly returning to the dams supplying Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as dam levels improve, but the city is not out of the woods yet. The metro has just under two years of water supply left.

DAM LEVELS ARE IMPROVING

Since May, overall dam levels have doubled. On the 18 May dams levels were at 16.93% and as of Monday 17 July the dams were recorded to have 34.71%.

The city continues to urge its residents to save water and use it sparingly, but the call seems to have no effect as the current daily usage far exceeds the City’s target consumption.

The Metro has targeted a daily usage of 230million litres of water however current consumption is at 290million- an excess of 60million.

WATER SAVING TIPS

Here are a few tips to save water:

  • Find and fix leaks.
  • Use alternative water resources, like collecting rain water or using grey water.
  • Use hand sanitiser instead of water to wash hands.
  • Spread wood chippings or mulch in your garden beds. This technique will reduce evaporation from the soil and prevent the growth of weeds.
  • Take out your lawn. Lawns are water hungry and can be swapped for much nicer alternatives.
  • Wash your car on your lawn.
  • Indoor plants can benefit from living in your bathroom, where there will be more moisture in the air.
