Guess what the Limpopo Provincial Government did recently? They dropped a whopping R55 million on 102 bakkies to gift to “deserving traditional leaders” in the province. Yep, you heard it right!

GOVERNMENT SPENT A WHOPPING R55 MILLION ON NEW BAKKIES

The Limpopo Premier Chupu Stanley Mathabatha threw a little party in Polokwane on Monday to hand over 57 of these bad boys.

That’s a cool R540,000 per bakkie. And hold your horses because the remaining 45 are apparently going to be handed over “as soon as [they] have been delivered” before the year-end.

Now, here’s the backstory. MEC for Limpopo Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Basikopo Makamu, spilled the beans on this massive giveaway during his department’s 2023/24 budget vote earlier this year.

The province’s bigwigs say that this whole shebang aligns with South African legislation, which apparently “directs” the Department of CoGHSTA to provide “enabling resources to ensure that traditional leaders can effectively deliver on the responsibilities tied to their positions.” Talk about ticking all the legal boxes!

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE!

So, the R55 million spent on these new rides is just a drop in the bucket for the provincial department’s financial allocations for senior traditional leaders in Limpopo for the 2023/24 financial year.

Limpopo Finance MEC Seaparo Sekoati spilled the tea in March 2023, saying they’re not just stopping at cars.

Oh no, there’s also R25 million for building and maintaining traditional council offices and another R5 million for making them look snazzy with some furnishings.
