The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has launched an extensive probe into allegations of serious maladministration within the Department of Home Affairs and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), focusing on corruption.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s signing of proclamations has authorised the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe into these matters, aiming to uncover any financial losses suffered by the state due to maladministration or corruption.

“The Proclamation empowers the SIU to probe serious maladministration in connection with the affairs of Home Affairs,” stated the SIU.

The SIU probe, conducted under Proclamation 154 of 2024, will scrutinise maladministration within the Department of Home Affairs. It will focus on the issuance of various permits and visas, along with the installation of T200 firewalls. The aim is to uncover any signs of corruption.

The SIU will investigate allegations dating back to 12 October 2004. They will also look into relevant occurrences before and after that date.

Regarding PRASA, Proclamation 153 of 2024 grants the SIU jurisdiction to investigate corruption allegations. These allegations are related to tender awards for train supply and the security access management system at train stations. The investigation period spans from 1 January 2010, to 16 February 2024.

“The SIU will also investigate serious maladministration in the affairs of PRASA relating to fraudulent liability claims processed and paid by PRASA’s Group Insurance Department,” added the SIU.
