JMPD announces road closures ahead of Soweto Derby clash

With the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates set to draw massive crowds on Saturday, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has moved to enforce major road closures around FNB Stadium.

They’re urging motorists to prepare in advance, as several main routes will be impacted.

Road closures: Roads affected

According to Jacaranda News, JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that approximately 24 streets and freeways will experience disruptions in the stadium precinct.

These include significant routes such as Nasrec Road, the N1 South and North, Golden Highway, Soweto Highway, and Booysens Reserve Road. Fihla explained that a contraflow traffic system would be effective in easing congestion.

“On the northern side of the stadium, it will extend from the N17 traffic circle to Shaft 17 Road, and on the southern side, from Adcock Ingram Avenue to Recreation Road,” he said.

“This system will provide three lanes heading toward the stadium before the match and four lanes leaving the stadium after the game.”

Closures Timed for Matchday Rush

Furthermore, to manage the expected traffic surge, Soweto Highway will be closed between the N1 bridge and Mentz Street in Booysens from 11:00. Despite these restrictions, Rea Vaya and Park and Ride services will continue to operate in the area.

Additional road closures will kick in from 5:00, including the N17 eastbound between the N1 and Nasrec Road traffic circle, and Rand Show Road eastbound at the N1 and Aerodrome Road.

“These measures are in place to enhance traffic flow after the match,” said Fihla.

Residents Urged to Remain Patient

Fihla appealed to residents living near the stadium to remain patient as traffic volumes are expected to be significantly higher throughout the day.

As thousands of fans prepare to attend the Soweto Derby, authorities take no chances to ensure order and safety in the surrounding areas.
