After Steve Komphela announced he was joining Swallows FC as head coach, many fans have called for Mamelodi Sundowns Senior Coach Manqoba Mngqithi to do the same.

The 53-year-old has been at Sundowns for 10 years and in his seven years, he was an assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane, where Downs won the CAF Champions League and the Super Cup in 2016. After Mosimane’s departure, Mngqithi, alongside Rulani Mokwena and Komphela were elevated co-head coaches for a few years.

MNGQITHI LIKELY TO LEAVE SUNDOWNS BEFORE THE SEASON ENDS

Since last year, the former Golden Arrows was demoted to assitant, with Mokwena now the only head coach. Many soccer fans feel Mngqithi should now go on his own and become a head coach of another team.

Before arriving at Downs, Mngqithi had spells at Golden Arrows, AmaZulu, and Chippa United and had a good reputation for his style of football which was attacking and exciting to watch. With Arrows, the 52-year-old won the MTN8 trophy in 2009 after humiliating the now-defunct Ajax Cape Town 6-0 at Orlando Stadium.

With Komphela now with Swallows, Mngqithi could follow given his contract expires next year.

His agent Mike Makaab told iDiski Times, that the senior coach is set for another year.

“Yes, it’s a fixed contract until the 30th of June 2024. Yes [he is happy to remain at Sundown] most definitely,” Makaab confirmed to iDiski Times.

Should an offer come during the course of the season, it is likely that Mngqithi will take it with open arms. Usually a few PSL coaches get the chop before the Christmas break and that should expected this season.
