Operation Shanela locks over 900 suspects behind bars

During Operation Shanela, some of the suspects were arrested for illegal mining, violation of immigration laws and unlicensed firearms.

Gauteng’s Operation Shanela, held simultaneously in all five districts in the province, continued to make inroads in the fight against crime and lawlessness as 908 suspects got arrested for a spate of crimes ranging from operating unlicensed taverns to those classified as trio crimes.

OPERATION SHANELA ARRESTS THIS PAST WEEKEND

The latest batch of suspects to feel the full might of the law were arrested this weekend, from Friday to the early hours of this morning.

The suspects are facing a range of charges that include illegal mining, contravention of the Liquor Act (unlicensed taverns/shebeens are often a primary source of assaults, murders and robberies), contravention of the Immigration Act, possession of unlicensed firearms, driving under the influence of liquor, rape and robberies.

Three suspects, two in Tembisa and one in Tsakane, were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms. The latter one from Tsakane is under police guard in hospital after he and his accomplices shot at the police as they tried to stop them.

ILLEGAL LIQUOR OPERATORS SHUTDOWN

In total 29 unlicensed liquor establishments were closed and fines issued to the operators.
Of the 29 of these outlets, four were closed by the provincial commissioner of the police, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, as he led Operation Shanela in the Sedibeng District last night, Saturday, 9 September.

POLICE ARREST THEIR ATTACKERS AT A TAVERN

Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner in the Eastern Cape has hailed the swift arrest of seven suspects involved in an attack on police officials in Maluti following an attack and robbery of two police Sergeants in Maluti late last night, 09 September 2023.

It is alleged that at about 23:45, the two crime prevention members were conducting compliance inspection at a tavern in Sibi in Diping location in Maluti when they were attacked by the patrons who didn’t want to the tavern to close. Members made a hasty retreat to request back-up when they were attacked at their vehicle and their firearms, a 9mm pistol and an R5 rifle were stolen. They were pelted with stones and the vehicle’s window and windscreen were damaged.
