National Traffic Police arrested more than 50 drivers for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol on the N1, N11, and R101 in Polokwane.

They carried out the arrests over the weekend during an operation that monitored heavy traffic as people travelled to religious pilgrimages in Limpopo and a cultural festival in the Free State.

‘Unroadworthy’

Police issued tickets to 163 unlicensed minibuses and pulled them off the road.

“A total of 237 vehicles were discontinued for being unroadworthy and displaying mechanical defects. Five motorists were arrested for attempting to bribe officers, and three motorists were arrested for reckless and negligent driving.

“In Gauteng, 384 Minibus drivers were arrested for driving without driving licences,” the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.
