Ramaphosa: Launch of Newlyn PX Terminal seen as symbol of growth

At the launch of the Newlyn PX Terminal, President Ramaphosa highlighted its significance as a symbol of recovery and resilience.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his address at the launch of the Newlyn PX Terminal in Durban, emphasised the significance of the project as a symbol of recovery and resilience.

He stated, “Today is a great day, marking a great achievement.”

The completion of the Newlyn PX Terminal reflects the perseverance and pioneering spirit of South Africa. It was achieved amidst challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest, and natural disasters.

NEWLYN PX TERMINAL: GOVERNMENT-BUSINESS COLLABORATION BOOSTS COMPETITIVENESS

Ramaphosa highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in driving infrastructure development. He cited the Newlyn Park Bayhead Rail Terminal project as an example.

Furthermore, he noted that the Newlyn PX Terminal project, announced at the South African Investment Conference in 2019, demonstrates collaboration between government and business to enhance logistical infrastructure and global competitiveness.

The President commended the terminal’s design based on global best practices. Emphasising its role in facilitating the movement of various types of cargo through the Port of Durban via sea, rail, and road. Also, he underscored the significance of rail capacity in shifting cargo transportation from road to rail, aligning with the National Land Transport Framework’s objectives.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS AND LOCAL CONTRIBUTIONS ACKNOWLEDGED BY RAMAPHOSA

Ramaphosa emphasised the economic benefits of the project, including job creation and revenue generation for Transnet. He acknowledged the contributions of local suppliers and service providers to the project.

Moreover, the President praised Newlyn PX Terminal commitment to further investments in infrastructure development, particularly in reducing dust emissions and expanding storage facilities for manganese and iron ore. He urged the private sector to partner with the government on priority infrastructure projects.

President Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the Newlyn PX Terminal’s pivotal role in enhancing South Africa’s logistics sector.

Additionally, he extended congratulations to Newlyn and Transnet. He affirmed the terminal’s status as a world-class facility poised to shape the country’s logistical landscape for years to come.
