Sea Point swimming pool closed
Cape Town’s popular Sea Point swimming pool will be temporarily shut down from tomorrow, 17 September for maintenance after a sinkhole was found under the pool.
According to the City of Cape Town, the site has been deemed unsafe for public use during this time, and health and safety precautions have been implemented, including signage and fencing of restricted areas.
Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that the sinkhole was created by a collapsed water line.
“Sea Point swimming pool is one of our most popular facilities, open all year long. During a routine inspection of the facility, a sinkhole was detected. The sinkhole was created by a collapsed water line. For a proper assessment of the damage and to determine the exact scope of work required for repairs, the entire water line must be unearthed.” Van der Ross said in the statement.
“At this stage, the pool has to be closed due to this critical work. We apologise to the facility users for any inconvenience caused, and will work as speedily as possible to ensure that this amenity is up and running soon,” she added.
Alternative pool
The City went on to advise bathers to use the Long Street indoor pool while Sea Point is closed.
Long Street’s pool operating hours are Monday to Sunday and public holidays, from 07:00 to 19:00
The City also said that every effort will be made to minimise unnecessary delays on the Sea Point project.
