The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on Thursday 9 October 2025, descended upon a massive Sandhurst mansion in Sandton to seize a spectacular collection of luxury vehicles and art belonging to prominent businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, a nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa from a previous marriage.

The dramatic asset seizure operation – which even included the confiscation of a toy Range Rover – marks a major step in the ongoing corruption and looting saga related to the R816.5 million in irregular transactions linked to Maumela’s syndicate, identified as the alleged kingpin of a network responsible for plundering billions from the Tembisa Hospital.

The raid, authorised under a Special Tribunal order, saw SIU officials and removal trucks entering Maumela’s luxurious three-story residence, which has been described as spanning from one end of the road to the other, housing amenities like a gym, full salon/barbershop and car wash.

The SIU is targeting assets believed to have been acquired using the proceeds of fraudulent hospital contracts. This operation follows successful steps taken two weeks ago, when the SIU assisted the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA’s) Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) in preserving some of these luxury assets.

The total value of assets identified and linked to the Maumela Syndicate amounts to approximately R520 million.

Maumela’s luxury fleet

Seized on Thursday and in previous actions were luxury vehicles collectively valued at over R223 million, including exotic cars such as:

  • Lamborghini Urus Aventador SVJ
  • Lamborghini Huracan STO
  • Lamborghini Aventador Ultimate Coupe
  • Lamborghini Urus
  • Bentley Continental GT V8

Furthermore, identified property assets linked to the syndicate include holdings in Bantry Bay (purchased at R75 million) and various high-end Gauteng suburbs like Hurlingham.

Maumela’s syndicate allegedly operated through sophisticated networks encompassing fraud, money laundering, bid rigging and racketeering. The SIU investigation revealed last week that the syndicate exploited the Tembisa Hospital’s procurement processes by using manipulated requests for quotations (RFQs) and deliberately splitting orders to circumvent mandatory tender processes.

This probe into malfeasance at Tembisa Hospital was launched following a proclamation initiated by the critical findings submitted in 2021 by the late whistleblower Babita Deokaran, who later died in a hail of bullets.

The SIU has confirmed referring matters to the NPA for criminal action and is pursuing civil litigation to recover lost funds, anticipating the complete investigation to be finalised by November 2027.
