South Africa set for two public holidays next week
Next week, South Africans get not just one, but TWO days off. Here’s a look at the public holidays we’ll be celebrating and when…

South Africans to enjoy a pair of public holidays
The coming week offers South Africans a welcome pause from the daily grind, with two significant public holidays on the calendar.
Freedom Day, falling on Sunday, 27 April, and Workers’ Day, observed on Thursday, 1 May, provide time not only to relax but also to reflect on the country’s journey toward democracy and the rights of its workforce.
Freedom Day
South Africans celebrate Freedom Day to honour the country’s first democratic elections, which took place on 27 April 1994. This year marks 31 years since that historic day when citizens of all races voted together for the first time.
Though it falls on a Sunday this year, some workers will benefit from Monday, 28 April, being declared a public holiday in lieu.
Workers’ Day
South Africans will take Thursday, 1 May, off to celebrate Workers’ Day, a tribute to the global labour movement and the hard-fought rights of workers. In South Africa, the day carries special meaning, as workers played a vital role in the anti-apartheid struggle for economic justice and democracy.
What it means for South Africans
With the two holidays falling just days apart, many South Africans are likely to take advantage additional leave days and make use of the gap to plan family time, mini getaways, or have a well-earned rest. But beyond the break, the week holds real meaning: a time to honour the country’s progress while staying focused on the road ahead.
