South African chef loses life on Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island
An electric buggy accident on Sir Richard Branson’s exclusive Necker Island claimed the life of a South African chef.

A 35-year-old South African chef tragically died in an electric buggy accident on Sir Richard Branson’s exclusive Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands.
The accident happened after a farewell party at the island’s renowned Great House, once home to Sir Richard Branson and his wife.
Lost control of the vehicle
The chef, identified as Sihle Somdaka, attended the celebration before leaving in a motorised buggy shortly before midnight.
Reports state that Somdaka lost control of the vehicle and crashed, suffering a head injury and losing consciousness at the scene.
Emergency responders, including the island’s medic with support from nearby Moskito Island, performed CPR and rushed him by boat to Peebles Hospital on Tortola.
Despite their efforts, doctors later pronounced Somdaka dead.
Medical personnel treated a second individual involved in the crash for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the fatal crash.
A source close to the situation said staff are cooperating with local authorities, while another insider claimed the tragedy may reflect a broader “culture of excess” on the island.
“They’ve had very many close shaves and near misses over the years,” the source told The Sun, “but this is the first time someone has died. It was only a matter of time, but it should never have happened.”
Sir Richard Branson, who was not on Necker Island at the time of the incident, is said to be “deeply saddened” and has reportedly been in contact with Somdaka’s family and the island’s staff.
“This is, of course, his primary concern,” a spokesperson told the media.
A spokesperson from Virgin Limited Edition said: “It is with deepest sadness that we can confirm that one of our Necker Island team members, sadly passed away on Saturday, 30 August 2025.
“They were a hugely talented and exceptional member of the Necker Island family, and we are all devastated by this news.
“Our utmost priority is the wellbeing of their family and friends, and that of our team, and we are doing everything we can to support them all during this very difficult time.”
Culinary world
Sihle Somdaka built a respected career in the culinary industry, working at prestigious establishments such as Opa Doha in Qatar and Razzmatazz in Kuwait.
After joining the Necker Island team, he frequently shared glimpses of his work and island life on social media, highlighting both his passion for cooking and the unique setting around him.
The fatal crash shocked the hospitality sector and South African expat community, who remember him as a vibrant talent lost too soon.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash and examining whether safety procedures or other factors contributed.
