South Africans living abroad: How to vote in the 2024 elections

South Africans living abroad can also vote in the 2024 elections. Here are the steps to ensure you get your vote in.

South African citizens living abroad can also make their mark and vote in the 2024 elections. As published by the Electoral Commission, the Voter Registration Weekend in South Africa will take place on 3 and 4 February 2024. South Africans who are living abroad need to notify the Electoral Commission of their intention to vote from outside the country by submitting a VEC 10 form, but this process is easy and can be done online for convenience.

It’s important to remember that only those who are South African citizens can vote in the 2024 elections. A form of identification is needed to prove this. Here are the other requirements to vote and how to ensure your vote is submitted.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO VOTE IN THE 2024 ELECTIONS?

Those living abroad need to have South African citizenship to vote in the 2024 elections. According to the Electoral Commission, South African citizens with a valid ID either in the form of a green ID book or smartcard can vote. Those with a Temporary Identity Certificate, South African passport or temporary passport can also vote.

HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE IF YOU ARE LIVING ABROAD

All South Africans need to ensure that they are registered to vote and it’s no different for those living abroad. South Africans living abroad can check their voter registration status online or contact the IEC. SMSes can also be sent to 32810 but don’t forget to include an ID number of the person living abroad.

SUBMIT AN INTENTION TO VOTE

Those living abroad, or voting from abroad on election, need to notify the IEC that they are voting from abroad. To do this, a VEC 10 needs to be submitted. The process to submit an IEC however has been simplified and the form can be downloaded and submitted online. The form can also be handed into the election house office.

WHERE TO VOTE

South Africans living abroad can vote by visiting their nearest South African embassy, high commission or consulate-general. A form of identification is needed on the day as well as a South African passport. No photocopies of documents will be accepted.
