According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), more than 100 political parties have submitted candidate lists to contest the 2024 elections. We already know the Democratic Alliance is leading the African National Congress in party funding, with R437-million donated in total to all parties at last count.

But, on the complete polar opposite side of the spectrum, we know there are 101 completely independent candidates contesting for seats in parliament and provincial legislatures. 14 of the 100-plus parties are already represented in parliament, say IOL.

Before the most hotly contested elections in 30 years (held on Wednesday 29 May, don’t forget) the IEC is working hard to verify that all the parties have met the requirements set out by the commission. This week, Friday 22 March, the commission will notify all parties if their candidates have been approved.

After that, between 26-27 March, the commission will open the list of candidates for inspection at all national, provincial and municipal IEC offices. Anyone who wants to raise an objection about any of the nominated candidate has until 17h00 on Wednesday 27 March to do so.
